Daniel Gohl

Chief Technology & Strategy Officer of US Education @ HP INC

Daniel Gohl joined HP Inc. in September 2022 and currently serves as Chief Technology and Strategy Officer for Education. He previously served as Senior Advisor to the Bob Moses Research Center for Math Literacy Through Public Education at Florida International University. As a learner and educator, he has focused on modernizing educational environments and practice by integrating digital tools, ensuring universal early literacy and mathematical fluency, prioritizing student voice and agency in experiential learning, integrating emerging technologies to promote learning, embedding data analytics in student and educator practice, and fostering engaging and healthy learning environments. He served as the Chief Academic Officer for both Broward County Public Schools and Houston ISD, in educational leadership positions in Florida, Texas, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia. He has successfully contributed to a variety of national and international collaborations in curriculum design, student assessment, and educational technology. Innovative and successful projects he has led span a wide variety of educational domains. A prominent example is the design and launch of McKinley Technology High School, a citywide district public high school focused on integrating emerging technologies with liberal arts preparation in the District of Columbia Public Schools. Prior to that he led the combination of two high-achieving selective high schools in Austin ISD to address issues of access, support, and equity with neighborhood schools. While in Newark Public Schools, his work included school redesign and creation after procuring more than $25 Million in new grant funding and the formation of the Newark Schools Research Collaborative with higher education and philanthropic partners. In the Houston ISD he designed and implemented Literacy By Three, an integrated approach to pre-kindergarten learning, early literacy, and English language acquisition, and PowerUp Hub, an open-standards, interoperability framework for instructional materials, educational records and student/teacher user experience. In Broward County Public Schools, he has overseen the development of districtwide K-12 programs in debate and computer science education, developed the Reimagining Middle Grades initiative with funding from the Community Foundation of Broward, restructured the delivery of special education services, and embedded data analysis and visualization to better serve student development and achievement. In response to the horrific school shooting tragedy at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, he led the establishment and development partnership with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine into the Broward community Recently, new initiatives in competency based learning and comprehensive learner records have laid the foundation for improving teaching, learning, interventions, and student post-secondary success. Dan was trained as a physicist and began his career in education at the secondary and college level in the fields of physics, astronomy, mathematics, and computer science. He has collaborated with domestic and international communities, including work in Zimbabwe, Turkey, and The Gambia, to advance educational equity and excellence. By prioritizing efforts to address closing opportunity and achievement gaps, integrating academic and career preparation, and bridging STEM and humanities education, he has embed earning with community development. He holds a master’s degree in science education from the University of Texas at Austin, a bachelor’s degree in physics from Vassar College and several educational certificates from the Texas Education Agency. Prior to entering K-12 education he studied physics at Dartmouth College, taught Cambridge A-Level computer science at Kutama College in Norton, Zimbabwe, taught physics & astronomy at Austin Community College, and did research at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. Dan was raised in the Mid-Hudson Valley region of New York and currently lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida with his wife and three children.

Eric Crespo was born in the Bronx and raised in North Bergen by his parents, who immigrated from Cuba. Eric Crespo has served as the Superintendent of Schools for Weehawken Public Schools in New Jersey since 2018. Before arriving in Weehawken, he was an Assistant Superintendent for Paterson Public Schools, the 2nd largest school district in New Jersey at the time. During his tenure in Weehawken Schools, the district has received the following awards, Lighthouse Award for Special Education Postsecondary Success, Digital Star Schools, Sustainable Schools, AP CSP Female Diversity, Namm Award for Best in Music Education, Tech and Learning Innovative Leader Award, and Niche rated Weehawken Schools the #1 district in Hudson County. Workshop Title: How to Adjust Instructing and Learning to be Successful in an AI World

Workshop Description: The introduction of AI tools has lead to confusion and frustration for teachers and the expectation of students that it creates a short cut to learning. Trying to avoid AI in education is a fruitless effort, but learning how to properly utilize it, create assignments that don't allow for improper use of AI and teaching students how to harness its benefits is crucial in teaching during the AI explosion. I would hope to provide an overview of what AI tools can and cannot do in regards to education, discuss common pitfalls teachers face when dealing with AI in their classrooms and giving examples of assignments of the past and how to adjust them so that students do not fall victim to the lure of AI.

With a unique career trajectory that began in the world of advertising, Dr. Hoeker transitioned to education to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children. She taught at the elementary level for seven years before serving as an elementary principal for eleven years, during which she successfully guided two schools through the rigorous process to be recognized as state and national Schools of Character. Her commitment to character education and leadership excellence has been transformative. In just one year as Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Hoeker and her team led all 12 elementary schools, two middle schools, and the high school to achieve recognition as State and National Schools of Character. Patricia Kahn, Ph.D. is the CIO and Assistant Vice President for Information Technology Services at the College of Staten Island. As a Senior Executive with over 25 years’ experience working in higher education, Dr. Kahn has provided the leadership and vision for technology operations and academic technology representing technology initiatives across two and four year institutions. Prior to coming to CSI, Dr. Kahn held the position of Executive Director of Information Technology Services at Brookdale Community College. Dr. Kahn also has extensive experience in academic technology and distance learning where she held various leadership positions during her nine-year tenure at Montclair State University. Dr. Kahn received her BS and MBA from Manhattan College, and her Ph.D. in Education from Capella University, with a concentration in Instructional Design and Online Learning.

Richard D. Tomko, Ph.D., M.B.A., M.J.

Dr. Richard Tomko has had numerous administrative responsibilities during his 24-year career in educational administration. He has been a building administrator at the middle and secondary levels and responsible for district-wide curriculum, assessment, innovative program initiatives, technology, and professional development while serving in central office positions for the last 15 years. Prior to his arrival in the Garfield N.J. Public Schools District, Dr. Tomko held the positions of Director of Athletics; Assistant Principal; Principal; Assistant Superintendent; and Superintendent of Schools in several public school districts in multiple counties in New Jersey. He also began to research the achievement gaps between learners and the transition of students from 8th to 9th grade, making changes to programs and personnel to help students be successful in their classes. Dr. Tomko obtained his principal license and School Administrator certificate after earning his Master's Degree in Educational Administration (M.A.E.), and he has attained the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) with a concentration in Educational Leadership, Management, and Policy from Seton Hall University. Dr. Tomko has also earned a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from The Johns Hopkins University; a Master of Jurisprudence (M.J.) Degree in Children’s Law and Policy from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law; the Certificate in Advanced Educational Leadership (CAEL) from Harvard University; a certificate in Accelerated Management from the School of Management at Yale University; a Graduate Certificate in Community and Economic Development from The Pennsylvania State University; a Graduate Certificate in The Brain, Teaching, and Learning from The Johns Hopkins University; a Certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from Cornell; and a Certificate in Transformational Non-Profit Leadership from the University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business. Dr. Tomko currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Educational Leadership and Marriage and Family Counseling graduate programs at Manhattan College, Montclair State University, and Seton Hall University. He was appointed by the last two administrations to serve as a Commissioner on the School Ethics Commission and was appointed to serve as a Taskforce Member on Teacher Shortages by Governor Murphy. Dr. Tomko is a current Trustee for EZ-Ride, and he has also served in the past on the Sparta Environmental Commission, the Sussex County Planning Board, and as a Trustee on the New Jersey Educational Services Commission (NJESC).

Dr. Melissa Quackenbush is a seasoned educational leader with nearly two decades of experience. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Program Evaluation from Old Dominion University and advanced degrees from Liberty University and the University of South Florida. Dr. Quackenbush has held various roles in public education, including secondary English teacher, Reading Specialist, Instructional Technology Coach, Supervisor of Humanities, and Assistant Principal. She currently serves as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Articulation at Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District. In higher education, Dr. Quackenbush is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at Old Dominion University, teaching courses in educational psychology, human development, assessment for learning, and program evaluation. She has also served as a Clinical Practice Supervisor for Pre-Service Teachers at Ramapo College and led instructional design projects for Liberty University and Old Dominion University. As a life-long learner, Dr. Quackenbush embraces the growth mindset and integrates AI into education. Dr. Quackenbush has presented at the AI Summit at Northern Valley Regional High School, Techspo 2024, Bergen County Women in Educational Leadership, Bergen County Curriculum Consortium, and for the Northern New Jersey English Supervisors. These presentations focused on AI use for teachers and educational specialists, as well as innovative use of AI in classrooms, including higher education. Additional research interests focus on teacher training, self-regulated learning, and computer-supported collaborative learning environments. Through her consultancy, Engage Momentum, she provides services in instructional design, professional development, and school administration. Dr. Quackenbush's expertise in innovative instructional strategies and technology integration makes her a valuable voice in educational leadership.

Brian is the Regional Sales Manager – Mid Atlantic for Getac, the leading manufacturer of rugged computers, tablets, and video products. Prior to Getac, he represented a leading Department of Homeland Security service provider and before that a secure wireless transmission resource responsible for the video surveillance network currently deployed in New York City and other leading metropolitan areas. For over 20 years. Brian has worked in the data intelligence community and been recognized for leading the deployments of a number of highly visible enterprise public safety solutions and applications. Brian has a master’s degree from St. Elizabeth University and is an undergraduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University. Brian is an active member of the NJ Association of Emergency Management and the International Public Safety Association. He is also a certified NCAA Ice Hockey official.
